The Problem with Conventional Livestock

Conventional livestock agriculture is among the most resource-intensive food production systems on Earth. It occupies approximately 70% of global agricultural land, contributes roughly 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions (according to the FAO), and is a leading driver of deforestation, water use, and biodiversity loss. Factory farming of pigs and poultry generates enormous volumes of concentrated waste that, if poorly managed, contaminates waterways. The environmental case for reducing meat consumption — particularly beef — is well established by the science.

Regenerative Grazing: A Different Model

Not all livestock systems are equal, however. Regenerative agriculture practitioners argue that livestock — particularly ruminants like cattle, sheep, and goats — can play a positive ecological role when managed holistically. Mob grazing (also called adaptive multi-paddock grazing) mimics the behavior of wild herds that historically grazed the world's grasslands: animals are moved frequently through a rotation of small paddocks, preventing overgrazing while allowing plants to fully recover. This management style, pioneered by ecologist Allan Savory and extensively developed by ranchers including Gabe Brown and Will Harris, builds soil organic matter, improves water infiltration, increases biodiversity, and — proponents argue — can sequester significant amounts of carbon in grassland soils. A 2020 meta-analysis in Nature Food found that well-managed pasture-based systems have substantially lower net emissions per unit of protein than confinement systems.

The Vision: Livestock as Ecological Partners

The regenerative livestock vision integrates animals into the farm ecosystem as active partners in soil building and biodiversity restoration. Pigs root and aerate compacted soils. Chickens follow cattle, scratching through manure and breaking pest cycles. Cover crops and diverse pasture mixes replace monocultures. Silvopasture — integrating trees into grazing land — creates wildlife corridors, provides shade and fodder, and sequesters carbon. This model is not a silver bullet, and its scalability and true carbon accounting remain actively researched and debated. But it represents a genuine alternative to both industrial confinement farming and a simplistic conclusion that all livestock must disappear from sustainable food systems.
